RetailWATCH: Tyco Retail Solutions Protects 50 Billion Items with Source Tagging

Tyco Retail Solutions (www.tycoretailsolutions.com), a leading provider of retail performance and security solutions, today announced its Sensormatic anti-theft source tagging program achieved an industry milestone, protecting 50 billion consumer products worldwide — five billion in apparel alone.  A trusted program for retailers around the world, more than half of Sensormatic labels are now applied by product manufacturers or packaging companies, instead of in store.  Tyco’s program encompasses source application of Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) disposable labels, as well as recirculated Acousto-Magnetic (AM) EAS and RFID hard tags.

To better serve shoppers, retailers want their employees to be motivated, focused, and to spend their time on the selling floor instead of in the back room.  Source tagging facilitates many of these goals, by enabling retailers to:

Reduce shrink with more consistent and effective EAS tagging
      Increase sales with floorready merchandise
      Openly and creatively display merchandise
Eliminate labor for in-store security tagging
      Focus employees on productive activities
Build a pathway to RFID-based inventory visibility solutions

“We rely on the efficiencies of Tyco’s Sensormatic source tagging program to improve product protection and ensure open merchandising for increased customer engagement,” said  Neil T. Watanabe, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Anna’s Linens. “By eliminating in-store tagging, we can redirect our store associates to focus on connecting with customers for a more personalized experience. By leveraging the power of the dual tag technology, we are laying the foundation for future RFID strategic inventory initiatives, critical to long term success in today’s retail environment.”

Hard tag recirculation is Tyco’s newest and fastest growing source tagging program, featuring reusable hard tags that are applied to merchandise at source, shipped to retailers, removed at the point-of-sale, and then recirculated.  Hard tag recirculation is also an important bridge in the migration to RFID-based solutions. With one dual AM/RFID hard tag applied at the source, retailers can control shoplifting and also gain vital item-level visibility for better inventory management.

“Source tagging is a critical, foundational component of any EAS system.  Achievement of this industry milestone underscores Tyco Retail Solutions’ leadership position in delivering innovative loss prevention and store performance solutions for retailers worldwide,” said Ramesh Jayaraman, Vice President, APAC of Tyco Retail Solutions.  “Our Sensormatic source tagging program effectively protects nearly every category of retail merchandise, from health and beauty products, to apparel, to hardware.  And our new dual-technology AM/RFID tags extend retailer value to include the invaluable benefit of Inventory Intelligence.  In addition to controlling shrink, Tyco’s RFID-based solutions can help retailers improve inventory availability, boost sales and ensure customer satisfaction.”
