HK’s retail trades post positive figures in 2009

According to the results of the 2009 Annual Survey of Economic Activities Import/Export, Wholesale and Retail Trades, and Accommodation and Food Services Sectors released last week by the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), total receipts (comprising sales and other receipts) of Hong Kong’s retail trade increased by 1.3 percent over 2008 to HKD310.7 billion (USD 39.95b); while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled HKD286.2b (USD36.8b) in 2009. Gross surplus increased from HKD22.6b (USD2.91b) in 2008 to HKD24.5b (USD3.15b) in 2009, accounting for 7.9 percent of total receipts in 2009. Value added increased by 3.5 percent over 2008 to HKD49.9b (USD6.42b).

The total receipts of the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors amounted to HKD3,505.4b (USD450.74b) last year, representing a decrease of 6.2 percent compared with 2008; on a per establishment basis, total receipts decreased by 10.1 percent compared with 2008 to HKD21.6 million (USD2.7m) in 2009.
