Retailers benefiting from fierce heat in Japan

The recent string of extremely hot days in Japan, with temperatures topping 35 degrees in many locations, has boosted sales of summer goods, including sunscreen and frozen treats. Knowing a good thing when they see it, many retailers have switched their focus to summer hot-sellers.

Drugstore chain operator Matsumotokiyoshi Holdings Co. has seen sales jump for sunscreen, antiperspirants and dry wipes. Sales of remedies for prickly heat and sunburn increased at rival Cocokara Fine Inc.

Seven-Eleven Japan Co. has enjoyed robust sales of soft drinks, including carbonated beverages, as well as ready-to-eat cold noodles.
