New Zealand retail card spending flat in June

Following a 1.2 percent increase in May, retail card spending remained the same in June, Statistics New Zealand reported.

Core retail spending (which excludes the vehicle-related industries) fell 0.4 percent for the same period.

"Spending rose in three retail industries and fell in three during June," business indicators manager Neil Kelly said. "Fuel and hospitality had the largest rises, while durables had the largest fall."

Card spending on fuel increased by 1.6 percent to $12 million, while card spending on hospitality went up slightly by 0.5 percent to $3.7 million. However, durables went 0.7 percent to $7.8 million (0.7 percent).

Across all industries in June, 112 million transactions were recorded, with an average value of $51. The total amount spent across all transactions was $5.7 billion.
