Taiwan’s CPI down slightly in January

Taiwan’s consumer price index (CPI) slightly decreased (0.15 percent) in January from December, but went up 1.15 percent when compared to the same period a year ago.

The Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said this is mainly because prices went down for clothing (down 4.65 percent due to promotions) and vegetables (down 2.66 percent due to sufficient supply).

However, air tickets prices and tour fees for foreign travel went higher during winter vacation, besides; meat and fish and seafood prices increased 1.83 percent and 1.96 percent, simultaneously.

DGBAS explained that the annual change of CPI in January 2013, compared with the same month of previous year, was 1.15 percent, mainly because prices of fruits, fuels and lubricants and water, electricity and gas supply moved up 14.92 percent, 11.01 percent and 4.38 percent separately.
