India's apparel retailers are eager to know how each store has performed, with "single store profitability" being the operative term.
Shital Mehta, COO at menswear brand Van Heusen, says "We do not open a store unless we think it will be profitable in the first season. Each store has to justify at least 20 percent profits."
To ensure same-store growth, Future Group-owned Indus League Clothing has engaged several localised marketing initiatives. For instance, for the Urban Yoga brand, the retailer has incorporated local gyms and yoga centres to promote walk-ins at its stores in that neighbourhood.
