Taking Stock: India’s Marico tries open source for distribution, logistics

Marico, one of India’s consumer products and services companies in the global beauty and wellness space, is bringing innovation to its distribution and logistics system.

With one in three Indians using a Marico product from cooking oil to rice and other healthy foods to skin care and beauty products and with presence in more than 25 countries across Asia and the Africa, it needs a more robust IT platform to meet local and global demand.

Satish Pai, systems administrator manager, Marico, business has been growing phenomenally and the company needs to retain its competitive edge. In 2009, its brands generated a turn over of approximately USD600 million

The solution deployed is a Linux-based open source solution from Red Hat, which lowered IT costs by 50 percent, simplify its management, reduce systems maintenance, and increase scalability and performance with SAP Business Suite.

Red Hat said a large portion of Marico’s cost savings resulted from the elimination of software licensing fees that are standard with proprietary vendors and the hardware cost due to the usage of RISC-­based architecture.
