China’s Da Vinci plot twists give clues to corrupt code of warped media-business influence

The furore around embattled luxury furniture retailer Da Vinci has taken yet another intriguing turn, this time revealing the twisted relationship between major media groups and big business.

Da Vinci Furniture took a battering after CCTV’s Weekly Quality Report aired damning allegations in July that the Singapore-based firm was selling "Italian-made" products that were actually manufactured on the mainland. In the latest plot twist, Da Vinci has turned the tables, accusing CCTV of fabricating reports and extorting money from the manufacturer.

In this article, Hu Shuli, the editor-in-chief of Caixin Century Weekly, says the mainland needs to safeguard editorial independence in order to keep the world of commerce in check and protect the broader public interest.
