Cyber Monday shopping more popular in China than US

eCoupons.com predicted more consumers in China will shop online on Cyber Monday than in the US, UK, Germany and Japan.

According to a new eCoupons.com/Ipsos global survey that released on Monday, 22 percent of Chinese plan to shop online on 29 November versus 17 percent in the US Cyber Monday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year, is the Monday after Black Friday where retailers offer big discounts online.

During Cyber Monday week, from 29 November  to 6  December, 61 percent of Chinese plan to shop online versus 45 percent in the UK, 43 percent in the US, 37 percent in Germany and 34 percent  in Japan. In the US almost half of 18-49 year olds (47 percent), as well as those with an income higher than the average (48 percent) plan to shop during Cyber Monday week. In comparison, in China, nearly two-thirds of adults aged 18-49 (60 percent) and those with an income higher than the average (64 percent) plan to shop online during Cyber Monday week.

This year, Cyber Monday will compete against last week’s "Cyber Black Friday" sales. Black Friday is the retail frenzy in the US where stores offer money losing sales to lure holiday shoppers. For example, US department store Target advertised a USD3 appliance for its Black Friday sale. To compete, online retailers launched Black Friday online sales creating "Cyber Black Friday". For the first time, Amazon held "Black Friday" sales in the US, UK and Canada. Amazon is promoting Cyber Monday sales in US, Canada and Germany on 29 November.  comScore reported that US Black Friday 2010 online sales jumped 9 percent  to USD648m.

For shoppers in China looking to take advantage of Cyber Monday sales, eCoupons.com created CyberMonday.cn with a directory of Chinese e-commerce stores and US retailers that ship to China.

Matthew Cheng, founder of eCoupons.com and CyberMonday.cn said, "Surprisingly, there are more Cyber Monday shoppers in China than the US, UK, Germany and Japan. With retailers in the US, UK, Germany and Canada having Cyber Monday sales, this is the first time Cyber Monday has become a truly global shopping event."
