China’s Taobao to launch supermarket biz

Taobao, a Chinese online retail platform, was preparing its supermarket business recently and it might come online next week, according to news from inside the company. It would mainly offer imported food and non-food products, which was the same as Tmall.com’s supermarket business, another brand under Taobao’s parent Alibaba Group.

Taobao supermarket opened its micro-blog page on Sina.com and its blogs were mainly introductions on chocolate and imported milk as it was preparing for its official launch. Taobao supermarket would attract its online high-end food retailers and traditional supermarket operators in this new business sector.
