New parents could find some reassurance in a baby monitor that uses fiber-optic sensors to detect when an infant has breathing trouble or wakes up.
Excelpoint Technology Ltd, of Singapore, has developed the Intelligent Baby Monitoring Mat to measure an infant’s breath rate and sound an alarm if there is a potential problem. The device is a finalist in the Asian Innovation Awards.
Excelpoint’s device is currently on sale in Singapore, branded as iBabyGuard, and in Taiwan, as uBabyCare; the retail price can range from USD370 to USD450. The company plans to expand into other markets in Asia-Pacific as well as Europe and the US, according to chairman and CEO Albert Phuay. It is currently working with established brand partners in the industry to use their retail distribution channels.
