Australia’s Coles launches Pay Tag

Coles has started the consumer trial of a new contactless payment technology called the Coles Pay Tag, with 5,000 mobile phone tags made available nationwide.

The supermarket chain said the trial will enable a sample group of 5,000 customers to pay with their credit card and earn flybuys points, by simply using a Coles Pay Tag attached to their mobile phone.

Coles is one of the largest MasterCard PayPass retailers in the world, with contactless payments increasing by over 70 percent in the past year.

Coles Finance Director, Rob Scott, said, “Our customers are constantly looking for ways to simplify their lives, save time and effectively manage their finances. The new Coles Pay Tag is set to do just that,” said Coles Finance Director Rob Scott.

By simply attaching the ‘sticker’ tag to a mobile phone, Coles MasterCard customers will no longer have to take their wallet into store when making contactless purchases. It can be used in Coles, Coles Express and in over 1.2 million retail locations worldwide that accept MasterCard PayPass.

“We believe there is a significant opportunity for Coles to deliver Australian customers further innovation in financial services, as we continue to look for new ways to deliver better value every day,” he explained," Scott said.
