Carrefour plans to open 30 stores in China this year

Carrefour will continue to make expansion in Chinese market in spite of a series of problems. Carrefour had kept its annual expansion rate at 25 stores in the past, according to reports. However, the retailer increased the figure to 30 for 2012, higher than that in 2011, which was seen as a signed of accelerated expansion in Chinese market, especially in the country’s western regions.

French retail giant Carrefour aims to build a large talent pool to facilitate its expansion in China.

Pierre Bertholat, vice president of Carrefour China, said on Thursday that the company will improve the performance of its Chinese stores and expand to the country's third- and fourth-tier cities through staff localisation and training.
 

Carrefour starts direct procurement in China's Sichuan

Carrefour started "farmer-store link" program in the Chinese city of Chengdu, Sichuan Province and attracted a large number of consumers on Tuesday. The activity by Carrefour Chengdu Branch was a response to the government's call to stabilise product prices and help ensure people's basic living, according to Shi Lipeng, procurement director for Carrefour in China western region.

Carrefour a week ago put the roll-out of the Carrefour Planet format on hold as it revealed a drop in profits in the latest financial year.

The news comes as Carrefour’s hypermarket format continues to suffer in Western Europe, despite the roll-out of Planet. The problems for Carrefour are two-fold in that in many European markets, discretionary non-food purchases are increasingly shifting online as well as being impacted by a consumer under continued pressure.

Taiwan's Carrefour takes all beef products off shelf over ractopamine scare

Taiwan's biggest wholesale business Carrefour announced that it would remove all US beef products in its 63 branches across the island until the products are legally certified to be free of ractopamine, on Thursday morning. According to an inspection report released by the environmental protection group Greenpeace on Thursday, chives sold at a Carrefour Yilan branch were tested to contain a pesticide level 1.7 times exceeding the legal amount, and the US beef ribs it sold allegedly contained ractopamine.

The board of Carrefour on Sunday approved the appointment of retail veteran Georges Plassat at the helm of the world's second largest retailer following months of turmoil, a source close to the matter told Reuters. Board members took the decision at a meeting on Sunday evening, the source said, but gave no further details.

Carrefour reviews hypermarket plan as trade worsens

Carrefour, Europe's number one retailer, said it was reviewing the 2012 rollout plan for its flagship new hypermarkets due to deteriorating trading conditions.

The French group also said last week the decline in its 2011 profits would be at the more pessimistic end of its predicted range, raising doubts over its turnaround.

The news is likely to pile pressure on CEO Lars Olofsson who is seen as being on borrowed time after a staggering six profit warnings in a little more than a year and a string of high-level defections and strategy U-turns.
 

Carrefour joins shark fin boycott in Singapore

French retail giant Carrefour will halt sales of shark fin products in its Singapore outlets after current stocks run out as a supermarket boycott of the delicacy gains steam, media reported on Saturday.

A Carrefour spokesman told the Straits Times it will not replenish its stocks of the environmentally controversial products after they sell out.

The company is the world’s second largest retailer and operates two supermarkets in Singapore's city centre.
