The online retailer eBay has claimed in its latest submission to the Australian Productivity Commission's inquiry into the retail industry that well known bricks and mortar stores have placed pressure on distributors and sellers to stop selling some items online that are also in their shops.

The explosive allegation comes as the commission continues to hear evidence from retailers and industry groups about the competitive pressures facing traditional outlets in the face of the growing popularity of online sites such as Amazon and eBay.

Driven by strong demand from overseas buyers, China and Hong Kong have been ranked as eBay's biggest exporters in Asia.

Annual overseas sales in 2010 by large eBay sellers on the mainland increased 34 percent year on year on average, while those in Hong Kong grew 14 percent, according to the firm's inaugural eBay Asian Exporters' Index report. The findings were based on internal data from eBay, the world's largest shopping and auctions website, and the results of a Nielsen survey of eBay sellers with annual sales exceeding USD100,000.

Amazon, eBay and Alibaba are all among the world's biggest online retailers, but are developing at very different speeds, a new study has found.

ComScore, the research group, reported Amazon's portfolio of sites secured 282 million visitors across the globe in June 2011, equivalent to 20.4 percent of the whole internet population. More specifically, 35.4 percent of people logging on were from North America, 31.8 percent from Europe and 24.1 percent from Asia-Pacific, with Latin America on just over 4 percent, the same as the Middle East and Africa.

American Apparel to launch online eBay shop

US fashion chain American Apparel is to launch an ecommerce shop on eBay in September in an effort to expand its distribution base beyond its own stores.

The online shop will be accessed via a link on the eBay home page and American Apparel expects the store, due to go live on 1 September, to generate several million dollars in sales within its first year.

eBay, PayPal sue Google for stealing trade secrets

Google and two of its executives were sued on Thursday by eBay and its online payment unit, PayPal for stealing trade secrets related to its mobile payment systems.

The two executives, Osama Bedier and Stephanie Tilenius, were formerly with PayPal and led the launch on Thursday of Google's own mobile payment system in partnership with MasterCard, Citigroup and phone company Sprint.

EBay to buy GSI for USD1.96b

EBay plans to buy e-commerce company GSI Commerce for USD1.96 billion in cash in a bid to draw more buyers and sellers to its online marketplaces.

GSI owns web businesses such as Rue La La, which offers one-day-only deals to its members, and ShopRunner, a members-only online shopping service that offers free shipping. GSI also provides technology, payment processing and customer care services for e-commerce sites.

In a statement, EBay CEO John Donahoe said the deal would help the company connect more buyers and sellers.

The online retail group eBay has dismissed a campaign from department stores in Australia to lower the goods and service tax threshold for imports, saying it would punish shoppers for the low investment by traditional retailers in their online businesses.

The head of eBay in Australia, Deborah Sharkey, said big local stores were lagging behind their overseas peers in backing online retailing.

She adds online dispute resolution – or ODR – is about getting customer problems resolved quickly and efficiently, so that the merchant can get back to business and the customer is completely satisfied.
