Hasbro goes from profit to loss in the first quarter. But the company anticipates full-year profits ahead of four major movie releases in 2012.

The toy maker made a net loss of USD2.5 million in the quarter to 1 April 2011, versus a profit of USD17.1 million in 1Q last year.

Hasbro to cut 170 jobs

Toy giant Hasbro will cut 170 jobs. Reuters recently reported that Wayne Charness, a spokesperson for Hasbro confirmed that 140 of the redundancies will be in the US, with around 55 in Rhode Island.

Charness went on to explain that each of the employees affected will get competitive severance packages, including outplacement services.

Hasbro backs Transformers video game with toys

Hasbro has identified another cross-market opportunity, announcing a range of action figures to accompany the Transformers: Fall of Cybertron video game from Activision.

Eight toys have been announced so far, the most notable of which is the huge combiner Bruticus figure, which is made up of five smaller Combaticons.

Zynga, the US firm behind FarmVille, has a market value of USD9.7 billion, which may increase after the Hasbro deal.

The pixelated cows so many people now spend their lunch breaks playing with online will soon morph into figurines for their desks.

Zynga, the San Francisco-based firm behind the popular Facebook games FarmVille and Mafia Wars, has signed a deal with Hasbro that will allow the 89-year-old board-game company to create real-life versions of the hit online games.

Toy maker Hasbro asks computer manufacture Asus to rename and halt production of its transforming computer.

Hasbro and Asus are on a legal collision course as the computer-maker has refuses to back down over the branding of its Transformer Prime laptop/tablet hybrid.

Hasbro is demanding damages and an injunction on sales of the product until an agreement is reached between the two parties.

US's Hasbro opts for Hara environmental management

Hasbro, the US-based multinational toy and board-game company, announced on Wednesday it has selected US-based Hara Environmental and Energy Management (EEM) to establish an environmental system of record, and monitor, manage, and optimise the company's natural-resource and energy usage and environmental impact.

"After a rigorous selection process Hasbro chose Hara for its breadth and depth of technology innovation and proven track record with large-scale, complex customer deployments," said Jackie Daya, president of global operations, Hasbro.
