Lenovo recalls desktops on overheating, fire fears

Lenovo Group Ltd, China's biggest personal computer maker, announced on Friday that it is recalling more than 50,500 desktop computers sold globally and in China, because of potential hazards of overheating and fire accidents.

Lenovo decided to recall the faulty desktops after two US consumers reported problems of power management which caused smoke and fire during usage, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Lenovo Group Ltd will invest heavily on developing super-mobility laptop models, such as introducing a new sub-brand for the so-called Ultrabook, China's biggest personal computer maker said in Shanghai on Wednesday.

It was the latest move by the traditional PC giants, including Lenovo, Dell Inc and Acer Inc, to penetrate the Ultrabook sector to challenge the dominance of Apple with its Macbook Air.

Lenovo Group Ltd. said Wednesday its profit rose 44 percent on strong growth in personal-computer shipments, and it expects gross margins to improve gradually as component costs fall. The company said its fiscal second-quarter net profit rose to USD76.59 million from USD53.08 million a year earlier.

Lenovo's improved results indicate that the global PC industry is benefiting from growing demand as consumers and corporations upgrade their spending on information-technology amid the economic recovery.

Lenovo Group Ltd, China's largest PC maker by shipments, said on Thursday it swung to a fiscal fourth-quarter net profit, due largely to cost control and robust sales in its home market, but warned margins will remain under pressure due to rising component costs.

The company said its net profit for the three months ended 31 March was USD13 million, compared with a net loss of USD264 million a year earlier. Revenue rose 56 percent to USD4.32 billion from USD2.77 billion.
