Samsung estimates record 4Q profit on strong smartphone sales

Samsung Electronics, the world's top maker of memory chips and smartphones, estimated on Friday its October-December operating profit would jump 73 percent from a year ago to a lifetime high, aided by record-breaking sales of smartphones.

The South Korean firm, which surged past Apple as the world's top smartphone maker in the third quarter, is quickly building on its supremacy with sleek designs and a rich product line-up, while the latest models from the likes of HTC, Nokia and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion struggle to attract consumers.

Korea's Samsung Electronics ended Nokia's 14-year leadership of the global mobile phone market in the first quarter of the year, outselling the struggling Finnish handset maker for the first time ever, according to a Reuters poll of analysts.

The poll showed analysts on average expect Samsung to have sold 88 million mobile phones in January through March, surpassing the 83 million which Nokia sold in the quarter.

Gregory Lee, the president and CEO of Samsung Asia, said Thailand is among its top three largest manufacturing bases in this region along with Vietnam and Indonesia.

It is also one of Samsung's fastest-growing markets in the world.

Apple's legal row over its iPad trademark in China creates a window of opportunity for rivals such as Lenovo Group and Samsung Electronics as they try to chip away at the US firm's dominance of the potentially vast Chinese tablet market.

Apple, the world's most valuable technology company, is fighting lawsuits brought by debt-laden Chinese electronics maker Proview Technology (Shenzhen), causing retailers and resellers in more than 10 Chinese cities to take iPads off their shelves, according to media reports.

Apple has asked a federal court in California to block Samsung Electronics from selling its new Galaxy Nexus smartphones, alleging patent violations.

In a suit filed last week in San Jose, Apple said the Galaxy Nexus infringes on patents underlying features customers expect from its products. Those include the ability to unlock phones by sliding an image and to search for information by voice.

Samsung spokespersons did not immediately return requests for comment.

 

Samsung posts record quarterly profit powered by smartphones

Samsung Electronics, the world's top technology firm by revenue, reported a record quarterly profit on Friday, aided by its best-ever sales of smartphones and one-off gains.  

The South Korean firm reported a KRW5.3 trillion (USD4.72 billion) operating profit for the October-December quarter, broadly in line with its earlier estimate of KRW5.2 trillion.   

That was up 76 percent from KRW3.0 trillion a year ago and 25 percent higher than the KRW4.25 trillion made in the preceding quarter. 
 

BlackBerry maker's shares jump on sale efforts report

Shares of Research In Motion jumped more than 10 percent after a tech blog said the BlackBerry maker was actively seeking to sell itself to South Korean smartphone rival Samsung Electronics.

The Boy Genius Report website cited an unidentified source saying that RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie was meeting with companies interested in either licensing its software or buying a part or all of RIM, with Samsung leading the pack.

Samsung Electronics said on Wednesday it was not interested in buying ailing Blackberry maker Research In Motion or licensing its operating system, refuting a tech blog report that RIM was seeking to sell itself to the South Korean technology giant.
 
Shares of RIM, which has been the subject of continuous takeover speculation with its stock valuation lingering at multi-year lows, jumped more than 10 percent on the report before falling back after Samsung's denial.
