Sony to cut 326 EMI jobs within 2 years
Sony Corp. plans to cut 326 jobs at EMI Publishing within two years after US and European regulators approve its USD2.2 billion acquisition of the UK music company.
Sony/ATV Music Publishing, jointly owned by Sony and the estate of Michael Jackson, may eliminate 152 positions in the first year, with the rest coming afterward, according to a document by UBS AG, an adviser to Sony. It lists USD39 million in severance costs.
Sony to develop next-generation TV with Taiwan firm
Sony Corp. is arranging to develop a next-generation television with an organic electroluminescent display with AU Optronics Corp. of Taiwan, sources said on Wednesday.
The TV will likely take several years to hit the market even if the development proceeds smoothly, the sources said. Sony is trying to catch up with South Korean rivals like Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, which lead others in development of the product.
Apple, Sony, 4 others sued by Graphics Properties
Apple Inc, Sony Corp and four other companies were sued by Graphics Properties Holdings Inc, formerly known as Silicon Graphics Inc, for allegedly infringing a patent through their sale of mobile phones and other electronic devices.
The lawsuits against Apple, Japan-based Sony, Taiwan-based HTC Corp, South Korea-based LG Electronics Inc and Samsung Electronics Co were filed in the US District Court in Wilmington, Delaware.
The patent at issue relates to a computer graphics process that turns text and images into pixels to be displayed on screens.

Sony Corp, struggling with a loss-making television business, is considering dissolving its LCD joint venture with South Korea's Samsung Electronics in a bid to cut costs, sources familiar with the matter said on Sunday.
The Nikkei business daily, which reported the news earlier, said the Japanese electronics and entertainment giant was aiming to reach an agreement by the end of this year to sell its nearly 50 percent stake in liquid-crystal display joint venture S-LCD to Samsung.
Sony recalls 1.6 million LCD TVs worldwide
Sony Corp. says it is recalling 1.6 million LCD televisions globally because of a defect that can trigger overheating, smoke and melting parts.
Sony says has received 11 such reports in Japan, though none involved injuries or damage beyond the TVs. The models subject to the recall in Japan are the Bravia KDL-40X5000, KDL-40X5050, KDL-40W5000, KDL-40V5000 and KDL-40V3000.
Sony to stop handing out 3D glasses
Sony Corp.'s movie studio has put theater owners on notice that it will stop paying millions of dollars per film for disposable 3D glasses starting next May, just before it is to release a couple of summer blockbusters – The Amazing Spider-Man and Men in Black III in 3D.
The move was announced in a letter sent to theater owners, according to a source at the studio. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity.
