Brand owners in the FMCG sector could gain meaningful benefits by serving "bottom of the pyramid" buyers in Indonesia, new research has suggested.

Standard Chartered, the financial services provider, reported that over half of all spending on consumer goods in the country is delivered by individuals earning less than USD4 a day.

Nirgunan Tiruchelvam, an analyst at Standard Chartered, thus argued that the considerable attention which has been paid to the middle classes may result in a major opportunity being missed.

In India, brand conscious urban teenagers belonging to the upper middle-class segment are spending on average INR4,000-5,000 (USD90.32-112.91) a month to update their wardrobes, according to an Assocham survey.

About 40 percent of the youngsters belonging to the affluent class of the society covered by the survey said they were spending up to INR4,000 a month on buying branded clothes, as 35 percent claimed an average expenditure of INR5,000 on them.
