Suzuki fires up eco-car, target sales of 10000 units in Thailand

Suzuki, Japan's fourth-largest automaker known for its strength in the compact-car segment, is gearing up its eco-car marketing campaign and sales, targeting sales of 10,000 units in Thailand's highly competitive small-car segment this year.

Becoming the third or fourth eco-car carmaker after Nissan and Honda, Suzuki has not yet decided on the trade name of its eco-car built in Thailand. Mitsubishi also plans to launch its eco-car in the Thai market in March before the Bangkok International Motor Show begins on 25 March.

Maruti Suzuki expects the Kizashi sedan to do what the Grand Vitara sports utility vehicle could not, which is to give it a strong foothold in the premium car market.

According to company officials, the petrol-engine Grand Vitara was at a disadvantage in a market dominated by diesel SUVs. In contrast, the luxury sedan market is more inclined towards petrol, which is Suzuki's strength.

On Thursday, Indo-Japanese automaker Maruti Suzuki announced officially that it sold over one million passenger cars during the last fiscal year, helping it join the elite band of car manufacturers such Toyota, General Motors, Volkswagen, Ford, Honda, Renault, Hyundai, Suzuki and Nissan, that are selling a million units or more every year.

The company sold 10,18,365 vehicles during 2009-10, of which 1,47,575 were exported. Total sales were up 29 percent, despite a difficult year.
