Toshiba Corp. has pulled out of the mobile phone business by selling its 19.9 percent stake in Fujitsu Toshiba Mobile Communications Ltd. to Fujitsu Ltd., the two companies said on Monday.

Toshiba Corp, Japan's biggest chip maker, booked a 72 percent fall in quarterly operating profit and cut its annual profit forecast as a strong yen and a weak global economy hit profits at the industrial electronics conglomerate.

Flooding in Thailand also hit quarterly earnings after it forced the company to halt some of its manufacturing lines.

Sony Corp., Toshiba Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. have largely agreed to integrate their operations for small and midsize liquid crystal display panels for mobile and tablet devices such as smartphones, sources said on Tuesday.

The three manufacturers are expected to formally announce as early as Wednesday the planned establishment of a new firm that would control a world-leading share of more than 20 percent of the global LCD panel market.

Toshiba Corp. on Tuesday raised its net profit forecast for the fiscal year that ended last month to JPY135 billion (USD1.64b) from the JPY100b it predicted in January, citing smaller-than-expected restructuring costs and real estate property sales.

But the Japanese electronics maker lowered its revenue and operating profit forecasts for the just-ended fiscal year due to the 11 March earthquake and subsequent power supply problems, which forced some of its domestic production facilities to temporarily shut down.

Toshiba Corp. said on Friday it will expand its lineup of liquid crystal display TVs in the Middle East and Africa in a bid to raise its market share there to 20 percent in fiscal 2013 compared with 9 percent at present.

The electronics giant said it will launch 10 new models later in the month, including the Power TV series, which is designed for emerging markets and allows viewing even in areas with weak signal strength.
 

Toshiba will launch new tablet computer

Toshiba Corp. said that it will release by year-end a tablet computer that runs on Google Inc.'s Android operating system, as the Japanese electronics maker aims to grab a chunk of a fast-growing tablet device market spearheaded by Apple Inc.'s iPad.

The company said it will sell the Folio 100 smartpad in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It has yet to decide whether to launch it in other regions such as the US or Japan, a company spokesperson said, "The market for tablet devices like the iPad is attracting a lot of consumer attention".

Toshiba to sell "no-glasses" 3D TV by year end

Toshiba Corp. will start marketing a 3D TV that people can watch without wearing special eyeglasses, the first such TV in the world, sources said on Tuesday.

The company hopes to have the product on sale by the end of this year.
 

Toshiba to cut costs by sourcing abroad

Toshiba Corp. said on Friday it will reduce the cost of procuring components, mainly for digital gadgets and home appliances, by a total of JPY1 trillion (USD11.64 billion) over three years by relying more on overseas suppliers.

A Toshiba spokesman said the company expects overseas supplies to account for 70 percent of its procurement cost in the fiscal year through March 2013, up from 57 percent in the last fiscal year.

Toshiba returns to profit; Asia sales up 18.7pc

Toshiba Corp. returned to profitability in the April-June quarter as global demand recovered for flash memory chips used in smartphones and digital cameras. Sales in Asia expanded 18.7 percent to JPY324.4 billion (USD3.76b).

The company – whose vast business ranges from household appliances to nuclear power systems – said on Thursday it logged a net profit of JPY466 million (USD5.4m) in the quarter compared with a loss of JPY57.8 billion (USD669.3m) in the same period last year.

Toshiba, MMC in electric vehicles tie-up

Toshiba Corp. said on Friday it is working jointly with Mitsubishi Motors Corp. (MMC) to develop a rechargeable lithium-ion battery system for electric vehicles amid growing demand for fuel-efficient cars.

Friday's announcement comes in the wake of a growing number of tie-ups between electronics makers and automakers as they seek to tap potential growth in environmentally friendly cars.
