A war of words has erupted between the former high-profile chief executive of David Jones, Mark McInnes, and his replacement, Paul Zahra, about who is to blame for the poor performance of the high-end department store group.

McInnes has hit back at what he believes are suggestions by Zahra that some of the problems at David Jones were the result of this actions or inactions while he was in the job.

The once highly profitable retailer is now forecasting profit will fall in the first half of this financial year by up to 20 percent.

Mark McInnes, the boss of the Australian retail sector investment firm Premier Investments, has turned on shopping centre landlords who benefit from rent increases tied to inflation, after a chasm between soaring rents and a slide in customer traffic brought the group a record 50 percent drop in full-year profit.

McInnes, the former CEO of David Jones, said in the midst of the retail downturn there were ''massive arguments'' being fought between landlords and their tenants.

Resurrected retail executive Mark McInnes has stamped his authority on Australian investment company Premier Investments's Just Group with the appointment of four key managers.

The former David Jones chief, who quit amid controversy over sexual harassment allegations, has moved to beef up management of the Just fashion business after only two months in his new role managing retail operations at Premier Investments.

Australian retail sector investment firm Premier Investments Ltd has appointed former David Jones boss Mark McInnes as CEO of Premier Retail as the company faces "extremely challenging" conditions.

McInnes resigned from David Jones in June last year after admitting to behaving inappropriately towards a female employee of the company.

Melbourne-based Premier announced the appointment on Friday as it reported a lower first half net profit, which the company said had been pulled back by a disappointing result from the Just Group clothing business.
 

Ex-DJs chief begged harassment accuser for "mercy"

Mark McInnes, former CEO of Australian retailers David Jones (DJ), begged a DJ employee Kristy Fraser-Kirk for "mercy" and to settle claims she made against him, saying his "whole life was about to fall down".

McInnes is being sued by Fraser-Kirk as part of an AUD37 million sexual harassment claim. The claims are being defended.

Australia’s Federal Court on Thursday released documents tendered as part of a pre-trial hearing in the case.
