1 in 5 Mobile phone users in Japan now owns a smartphone
comScore, Inc. , a leader in measuring the digital world, recently released data from the comScore MobiLens service, reporting key trends in the Japan mobile phone industry during the three month average period ending February 2012. The study surveyed more than 4,000 Japanese mobile subscribers and found Sharp to be the top mobile handset manufacturer overall with 23.5 percent market share. Google's Android platform accounted for the majority of the smartphone market at 61.4 percent, followed by Apple with 34.2 percent of the market.
Samsung seen taking mobile phone crown from Nokia
Korea's Samsung Electronics ended Nokia's 14-year leadership of the global mobile phone market in the first quarter of the year, outselling the struggling Finnish handset maker for the first time ever, according to a Reuters poll of analysts.
The poll showed analysts on average expect Samsung to have sold 88 million mobile phones in January through March, surpassing the 83 million which Nokia sold in the quarter.
Toshiba exits mobile phone business
Toshiba Corp. has pulled out of the mobile phone business by selling its 19.9 percent stake in Fujitsu Toshiba Mobile Communications Ltd. to Fujitsu Ltd., the two companies said on Monday.
Nokia to shut Indian mobile money service
Nokia will close down Nokia Money, a financial service it runs in India, as it continues to narrow its focus on its mobile phone business and location-based services.
"The mobile financial services business is not core to Nokia so we plan to exit the business," said a spokesman for the company.

India's telecom ministry said on Thursday that mobile phone operators must scrap "illegal" mutual roaming agreements allowing them to provide nationwide 3G services. Leading operators such as Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar and Idea Cellular had struck pacts with each other to offer ultra-fast 3G mobile services in areas where they did not win spectrum in a bandwidth auction last year.
China's mobile subscribers rise 1.3pc to 963.7m
China, the world’s largest mobile phone market, saw a 1.27 percent monthly increase in total number of mobile subscribers to 963.68 million in November, data from the country’s three telecom operators showed.
China Mobile, the country’s largest mobile carrier, said its mobile subscribers in November increased to 644.32 million, including 48.01 million 3G subscribers.
Vietnam's mobile phone sales high in Q3
Mobile phone sales in Vietnam remained high in the third quarter despite the economic woes, increasing by 43 percent quarter-on-quarter.
According to a report from the International Data Corporation, smartphone sales were up 48 percent thanks to strong performances by Samsung and HTC.

Keeping its strong growth momentum, China's telephone users hit a new record of 1.24 billion, while the numbers of 3G users touched 102 million.
China's 3G mobile phone users reached 102 million by the end of September, 43.16 million of which used the country's self-developed TD-SCDMA standard, said Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
